Wustefest 2009: The Desert’s Hottest European Car Show What Happens in Wustefest… Will be all over the interweb come Monday.
Back in the late 1960s, Volkswagens from all over the West Coast gathered at the first BUG-IN at the old Orange County International Raceway in Southern California. This tradition of showing and racing one of America’s most beloved icons of automotive history lasted for over 15 years before the historic OCIR was shut down in 1983. My parents took their Bug to the track all the time, and I was only three when the last VW ran his final race. I don’t remember a whole lot, but the photos in my parent’s albums show the history of how this one little car brought so many people together……read more

Start planning your trip for ‘09 because you won’t want to miss next year’s Wustefest! In only its second year, the event, organized by Pure Euro and Abbott Automotive, put itself on the Euro map by drawing more than 300 cars from CA, NV, OR, WA, UT, AZ, NM, and even Canada.
So why is everybody talking about Wustefest? Undoubtedly, the location makes it alluring. Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world – endless resorts stretch across the city, which include the best gambling, eating and partying in the States. Mix in a weekend Show ‘n Shine, BBQ and a spirited drive through the mountains, and its a no-brainer Wustefest is destined for Euro glory. The majority of participants journeyed from California. We prepared Project Silverstone for the 600-mile round trip and reported no major incidents. For the cars the did experience problems, the organizers had hired a full-time support vehicle to follow the cruise from SoCal and through to Mt. Charleston.
Perhaps the two highlights of the Wustefest were the free BBQ at Black Sheep Performance, as well as the show ‘n shine at Town Square. With the rising price of fuel, it was a relief to discover the sponsors had contributed most of the activities.
Black Sheep was the host for the second day, which included complimentary hamburgers and hot dogs. Located across the freeway from the Vegas strip, it was also a great meeting spot for the Mt. Charleston drive.
The show ‘n shine on the final day took place at Town Square, a new outdoor shopping mall south of the strip. The free 300+ car show was judged by people’s choice and the summer weather made it enjoyable for everybody – even the food was provided by a local dealer, Audi Henderson. It supplied authentic brats for show-goers and brought out an R8 for people to touch n’ smell.
We’re counting down the days until Wustefest ‘09. If you’ve never been to Vegas, here’s a good reason to visit with 300 fellow enthusiasts!

“Wustefest became a sign of things to come in the Southwest Euro community as 130 Euros traveled to Las Vegas, NV for a weekend filled with the typical Vegas activities, along with a drive and a car show. In its inaugural year, the three-day event was organized by SoCal car club, Pure Euro. With the help from sponsors Findley VW, Polizie Clothing, Graphicsworks, Blacksheep Performance, and TKO Motorwerks, the event was virtually free except for lodging, gas and “recreational” expenses.
The event started 150 miles southwest of Las Vegas in Barstow, CA, where the NorCal and SoCal drivers met for a final caravan to Sin City. After a short cruise along the Strip, the group checked into the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casiono, where they partied all night long. The event wasn’t just about wild nights and gambling, though. The next morning, Wustefest participatnts gathered for a BBQ and drive up Mt. Charleston. The one-hour drive offered some twisty roads and beautiful photo opportunities for the gruop. It was also cooler in the mountains, since the temperature in the city exceeded 100*. That night, the Wustefest gang headed back to the Strip of a VIP party. On Sunday, a show and shine event was help at Sunset Park, with the help of Finley VW. The top five cars were awarded trophies and everybody enjoyed a complimentary BBQ. Pure Euro represetnative Brandon Chasin concluded, “Wustefest started out as a SoCal-to-Vegas troud trip. We came out to party and meet new friends but never wanted it to be a car show.”
